(C78) Innocent Key – 東方イノセントキーの本気(ガチ)

August 17, 2010

Lack of higher res album covers makes muffie a sad person. Oh well, can’t be helped. Starting off the Comiket 78 reviews with an Innocent Key album. While Innocent Key usually spends time making decent enough HEY LOOK THIS IS CUTE YOU LIKE IT YES? albums, every once in a while they come out with something serious. How good are their serious albums? Well…pretty good imo.

Album Name: 東方イノセントキーの本気(ガチ)
Artist/Circle: Innocent Key
Release Date: Comiket 78

  1. 叙聖のクオリア~Subterranean rose~
Starting this album off is a track sprinkled with shredding guitars and chanting choruses. Maybe I just have a thing for choruses, but by starting off an album with this track Innocent Key is letting us know that this is a serious album. The vocalist for this song is pleasant to listen too, and this being a remix of uh…Last Remote and Hartmann’s Youkai Girl (thank you vgmdb). This rock/orchestral(?) track is a great way to start off.
  2. Synapse Reactor
A more techno-y track than the first one, and a remix of Border of Life. It’s your standard Border of Life techno remix, nothing incredibly special about it. But it’s good enough to warrant a listen or two and not just skip over it.
  3. 甘い夢、魔性の林檎
We shift back into rock with this one, a mix of Bad Apple. Interestingly enough, the vocalist for this one is Sekken’ya, so your mileage may vary depending on how much you like his voice. For me, Sekken’ya’s pretty hit or miss for me (saying this only having listened to one of his albums before), but he appears to have more control over his voice in this track then in other songs I’ve heard him in.
  4. 甘い夢、魔性の林檎
Now we go into a more folkish/traditional remix of Lullaby of a Deserted Hell. Maybe because I have a bit of bias towards this song, but the slightly airy vocalist helps give rise to this dreamy track to Hell. Katakiri-esque chorus sprinkled throughout the song adds more points to this. One of the better tracks of this album, but that might be just because I love the original.
  5. 幻想森精宴
???? mix of Refrain of the Great Lovely War (I suck at genre classification). An overall decent track, but the random saxophone around the halfway point is about the only thing that makes it stand out a little. Although I do like the clapping in the end-half.
  6. 狂宴葬宴~Rhapsody~
OBLIGATORY NECROFANTASIA ALERT. At least it’s partnered up with Demistify Feast to make it…not completely Necrofantasia. A rock track with a bit of piano mixed in for good measure. How much you like this song depends on how much you like the originals (which is how it is for most Touhou arranges really) and how much you like the male vocalist. It’s the type of vocalist you’d hear in a Sentai show or in Busou Renkin’s opening (WOOOOOAAAH WOOOOOOAAH DA DA DA DA DA DAAAAAAA!). You know, that kind of voice.
  7. ブクレシュティの人形師~Evolve Mix~
This is a remix of a remix or something? I don’t know, but this is a purely instrumental mix of the Doll Maker of Bucuresti. And by instrumental I mean synthesized, not actual instruments. It’s decent, nothing to write home about, but good to have as background music while working on stuff or browsing the internet.
  8. Eternia
Yaaayy more rock~ Remix of the Gensokyou the Gods Loved, this is a.. once again decent track. I like guitars  in my Touhous, so to me this decent track is…a slightly more decent track. Go figure.
  9. Float
Obligatory U.N. Owen was her, but it gets points for not sounding totally like U.N. Owen was her. The parts that sound like U.N Owen are the synth backing and the main chorus, but there’s enough originality in the mixing and voicework so it doesn’t sound too much like a rehash of the same exact thing we’ve heard a million times. It’s a better-than-average U.N. Owen, to say the least.
  10. LuvincaRnatioN
Awwwwwyeah beats. Remix of Reincarnation, a relatively mellow track with a female vocalists to a BGM with beats. I like beats, if you haven’t noticed. A pretty calming track, nice vocals and BGM. I like this kind of stuff since most arrangers never really bother to delve into this genre. And the tempo picks up a bit in the chorus, so the song doesn’t make you feel too lazy.
  11. 不夜城レッド
Obligatory Septette for the Dead Princess mix. Although I do like the original song, so another remix of it doesn’t bother me too much. Your average female vocalist with rock backing fare. It’s a good mix, but I personally prefer heavy orchestral remixes of Septette.
  12. 朝霧の夜明け
Traditional instrument remix of Youkai Mountain. I do love me some traditional, and the unorthodox timing of the vocals and instruments at some points adds to this. One of the better tracks, simply because I like traditional stuff. Other than traditional, there’s not much else to say.
  13. らぶちゅ☆CHIREIDEN
OH. HEY. LISTEN. THIS SONG IS CUTE. RIGHT? RIGHT?! Mix of Satori Maiden and Heartfelt Fancy, but I was too distracted by HEY THIS IS CUTE to really notice the similarities. In an otherwise relatively serious album, Innocent Key has to get their cute on. And…well, it certainly is very sugary and cute. Can give me diabeetus. Cute songs like these are usually good for a listen or two, but nothing more than that. I can only take so much of that high-pitched cute voice after all. Unless it’s miko, because miko’s cute voice is great.
  14. Purple Slitは雨に濡れて
And from moe diabeetus we go into some smooth jazz. Of course…it’s yet another obligatory Necrofantasia mix, but it’s some smooooooth jazz, so I can overlook that. A must for jazz lovers (although I consider myself relatively new to jazz music), this is a calm and soothing track to just kick back and chill to. I can even go the extra mile and wear a beret and sip some coffee while reading poetry to this. Oh, and tinted sunglasses. And is it just me, or does the title of this song sound like an innuendo?
  15. Erosion~境界の理~(instrumental)
A gothic sounding rock track that’s actually good enough to make me want to check out the original. Sad thing is, I don’t know what album the original is located on. It’s apparently a remix of Phantom Ensemble, but for the life of me I couldn’t find the resemblance. Maybe I just haven’t listened to the originals enough.
  16. Concealed.(instrumental)
Another cool sounding rock song that makes me want to check out the original. Although I’m starting to think that the only reason I’m really paying attention to this is because there’s no vocals, and I might really be an instrumental lover? Nah… Anyways, original song is UFO Romance in the Night Sky and Heian Alien.
  17. 幻想カレイドスコープ(instrumental)
An instrumental of a cute song I’ve heard once before IIRC. Nothing really special, and you can tell that the original probably sounded really cute from the BGM alone. Whether that’s a plus or minus, I really can’t say. Apparently a remix of Dichromatic Lotus Butterfly and Maiden’s Capriccio.

Rating: 7/10 (Overall a solid album, not really any misses but only a few hits.)

Recommended Tracks: Tracks 1, 4, 14
